About CAAA
Founded in the Silicon Valley in 1996, the Chinese American Abacus Association (CAAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of abacus culture and education in the community.
CAAA is committed to sharing knowledge and expertise about the abacus through community outreach programs and abacus classes. Students and teachers participate in community events to showcase uses of the abacus and perform demonstrations of mental arithmetic. The excellent achievements in math by abacus and mental arithmetic students have drawn attention and interest from educators in the public school system. This recognition has led to the implementation of abacus class into school curricula and after-school programs as a means to help improve math skills.
CAAA supports a network of abacus teachers by providing resources and training seminars. Every few years, CAAA conducts a teachers' training course to educate aspiring instructors about how to teach the abacus and mental math. Our certified member teachers offer classes at Chinese schools as part of the cultural curriculum and also through their classrooms. In addition, exceptional abacus students are mentored as classroom assistants and encouraged to become future abacus teachers. These student teachers have served as abacus teacher volunteers with organizations such as Friends of Children with Special Needs (FSCN).
Every year, CAAA hosts an Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Assessment Test nationwide to test the skill levels of students and encourage their progress to higher achievements. These tests are attended by over 600 students, and culminate with an awards ceremony to recognize the students' hard work and dedication.
In addition to serving the Bay Area and nationwide, CAAA hosts and participates in international competitions such as the World City Cup and other invitationals. Each year, CAAA sends a delegation of eligible students to host countries for a week of competition and cultural exchange. As a founding member of the World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (WAAMA), which was established in 2002, CAAA meets annually with abacus leaders from the Asia-Pacific region to share best practices and reflect upon experiences in the classroom and the community.
CAAA is a federally registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
